The United Kingdom, is an island country located off the North Western coast of mainland Europe. The United Kingdom is a collective of England, Wales, and Scotland, as well as the northern portion of the island of Ireland, known better as Northern Ireland.

The capital is London, which is among the world’s leading commercial, financial, and cultural centres.

The origins of the United Kingdom can be traced to the early 10th century.  But it wasn't until 1707, when Scotland was formally joined with England and Wales to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

Throughout its history the United Kingdom has made significant contributions to the world economy, especially in technology and industry.

However, since the middle of the 20th Century the United Kingdom’s most prominent exports have been cultural, including literature, theatre, film, television, and popular music that draw on all parts of the country. It could be said though that Britain’s greatest export has been the English language, now spoken in every corner of the world as one of the leading international mediums of cultural and economic exchange.

The United Kingdom retains links with parts of its former empire through the Commonwealth. In 1973 the United Kingdom became a member of the European Union but in June 2016, in a referendum on whether the United Kingdom should remain in the European Union, 52 percent of British voters chose to leave. After much negotiation, several deadline extensions, prolonged domestic political discord, and two changes of prime minister, an agreement on Brexit was reached that satisfied both the EU and the majority of Parliament. Meaning that on the 31st January 2020 was the first country to withdraw from the EU.

The economy, education system, healthcare, culture and geographical location are things that make the United Kingdom attractive for people who are looking to move. That said it doesn’t matter how bad you want to move, it is very important that you do thorough research before you commit to the move, especially if you are moving as a family.

When planning to move to the United Kingdom, you might want to consider the 5 important points below;

You will need a Visa that allows you to live in the United Kingdom

The type of visa you need to move to the United Kingdom will depend on where you are moving from, why you want to move to the United Kingdom, how long you want to stay, along with your personal circumstances and skills  all depends on what you plan on doing and how long are you staying. There are many types of visas, like visa for a holiday, a work visa, returning resident visa to name but a few. It is very important you know that visas can be costly and can also take a long time to finalise, so make sure that you add the cost of the visa into your budget plans - Visa Options

Review the cost of the rental market or housing

Many migrants have already decided which city they are moving to well before there Visas have been received. For some the decision is influenced by family and friends for others it is work related. Either way there is a vast difference in the rental market and also the house sale market between cities and also within cities. One of the best resources for researching both rental prices and house sale prices is Rightmove, who are the United Kingdom's number one property website for properties for sale and to rent

You will need an United Kingdom Bank Account

With much of the worlds banking conducted online now you can open a bank account before you move. There are however three options (1) UK Bank Account - if you've already got a place to live in the UK, you'll need to show two lots of proof – one document to prove your identity and the other to prove your address. If you do not have a UK address then there are other options (2) International Bank Account - Most of the major banks in the United Kingdom will let you set up an international account, but it's not for everyone. You'll need to have quite a large deposit and some contracts lock you in for a certain amount - it is best to check with your preferred bank for further details. One other option to consider would be a (3) Multi - Currency Account, also known as foreign currency accounts, let you hold several different currencies in the one account. They're mostly used for sending and receiving funds in foreign currencies. So if you're moving to the UK but still have transactions you need to make in Australian dollars, this could be an option for you. Link of banks in the United Kingdom

Finding the right employment

Unless you are retiring to be with family in the United Kingdom it is inevitable that you will need to find employment. For those that are transferring with their current employer or even for those that are being sponsored by an employer to relocate to the United Kingdom your box has already been ticked in this section. For those that are moving to the United Kingdom for personal reasons and need to find employment then it is very worthwhile starting their search as soon as possible. Are your skills transferable?? in most instances they will be but in certain areas retraining will be necessary to meet United Kingdom Standards. Be sure to make sure all of your qualifications and accreditations are up to date and available for assessment by potential employers. Weather

If you are currently living in a warm climate then be prepared for the weather in the United Kingdom. The farther north you plan to move, the darker and wetter it is. Rainfall is plentiful, although it is not constant. During the winter, there will only be about five hours of sunlight, and sometimes this is partially behind clouds. Although it is not a life or death situation, many people truly need more sunlight to function well. Most importantly, it is best to be prepared for the change and know what to expect..

The UK has a very multicultural society and is very open to new religions and cultures. While also keeping long-held traditions like maintaining a royal party, the United Kingdom has changed greatly and has become much more cosmopolitan and multicultural. The United Kingdom is seen as a destination of great diversity with London being the hub for many international visitors.

English culture tends to dominate the formal cultural life of the United Kingdom, but Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have also made important contributions, as have the cultures that British colonialism brought into contact with the homeland.

Widespread changes in the United Kingdom’s cultural life occurred after 1945. The most remarkable was perhaps the emergence first of Liverpool and then of London in the 1960s as a world centre of popular culture. The Beatles were the first and best-known of the many British rock groups to win a world following. British clothing designers led the world as innovators of new styles of dress for both men and women, and the brightly coloured outfits sold in London’s Carnaby Street and King’s Road shops became more symbolic of Britain than the traditionally staid tailoring of Savile Row.

Other changes in the years after Word War ll saw the rising standards of education. The number of pupils going on to higher education increased dramatically after World War II and was matched by a major expansion in the number of universities and other institutions of higher education. In society in general there was a marked increase in leisure. Furthermore, immigration, particularly from the West Indies and South Asia, introduced new cultural currents to the United Kingdom and contributed to innovation in music, film, literature, and other arts.
