Australia is the sixth biggest country in the world and the smallest continent. It lies between the Pacific and Indian Ocean, about 3,000 km from the mainland of Asia.

Australia is very remote, with New Zealand as it's closest neighbour, which is still a 4 hour flight away. Travel time by air to and from Europe is over 20 hours. Australia or as it sometimes referred to 'Down Under' is called so because the whole continent lies south of the equator.

All of the world’s climates are prevalent in Australia - from the tropical rainforest in the north to the cool and temperate climates in the south and southeast.

Australia is also one of the richest countries in the world. It produces wool and meat on one side, as well as gold, bauxite and other minerals on the other. Australians have a relative high standard of living.

The stunning beaches, incredulous blue skies, and laid back lifestyle are things that make Australia attractive for people who are looking to move. That said it doesn’t matter how bad you want to move, it is very important that you do thorough research before you commit to the move, especially if you are moving as a family.

When planning to move to Australia you might want to consider the five important points below;

You will need a Visa that allows you to live in Australia

The type of visa you need to move to Australia all depends on what you plan on doing and how long are you staying. There are many types of visas, like visa for a holiday, a work visa or a permanent residence visa. It is very important you know that visas can be costly and can also take a long time to finalise, so make sure that you add the cost of the visa into your budget plans - Visa Options

Review the cost of the rental market or housing

Many migrants have already decided which city they are moving to well before there Visas have been received. For some the decision is influenced by family and friends for others it is work related. Either way there is a vast difference in the rental market and also the house sale market between cities and also within cities. One of the best resources for researching both rental prices and house sale prices is www.realestate.com.au

You will need an Australian Bank Account

With much of the worlds banking conducted online now you can open a bank account before you move. You will however, need to make an appointment at your chosen bank when you arrive to validate your ID and collect your bank cards. Like the rest of the world, most of the cards in Australia have the option for contactless payment, and all it takes to pay is the person at the register asking if they can tap your card to make your payment. Finding the right employment

Unless you are retiring to be with family in Australia it is inevitable that you will need to find employment. For those that are transferring with their current employer or even for those that are being sponsored by an employer to relocate to Australia your box has already been ticked in this section. For those that are moving to Australia for lifestyle reasons and need to find employment  then it is very worthwhile starting their search as soon as possible. Are your skills transferable?? in most instances they will be but in certain areas retraining will be necessary to meet Australian Standards. Be sure to make sure all of your qualifications and accreditations are up to date and available for assessment by potential employers. It can get really hot

Australian residents are used to the weather systems where they live and whilst a number of states do experience the usual four seasons, the summer, no matter where you live, the heat can get unbearable. Even though it’s not hot all year round, if you come from a cold part of the world you will need some time to acclimatise. That said, the majority of housing has air-conditioning as standard, as do many businesses and retail outlets so you are never too far from a cooler area when the mercury hits the mid 30's and above.

Australia is a unique country and the Australian culture has grown from its isolation, from the original Aboriginal inhabitants, to the first settlers coupled with a large immigration program after World War 2, all of which and more have made it one of the greatest multicultural nations in the world.

Australia is in essence a Western culture with a democratic system of government mainly based on the British Westminster system.  English is the main language and Christianity is the dominant religion. That's not surprising when you consider that the British colonised Australia in 1788 when the first wave of banished convicts and settlers arrived.
